One of the medical procedures to treat Cancer is Targeted therapy. This therapy mainly uses drugs to stop cancer from attacking the body. Targeted therapy can be used along with chemotherapy and other treatments. The drugs used in targeted therapy works by targeting specific genes or proteins.

There are two types of targeted therapy:

Small Molecule Drugs:

  • This therapy blocks the proteins and enzymes that make the cancer cells to grow.
  • As the name shows, these are very small and it is very easy to enter the cancer cells.
  • Patients usually take these through tablets or capsules on regular basis.

Monoclonal Antibodies:

  • This therapy attacks the cancer cells and prevents the toxic substances that develop in the body
  • They are very bigger to enter into the cells, so they affect the targets outside the surface of the cell.
  • Patients usually take these through tablets or capsules on regular basis.
  • This can be taken by means of injections.

Targeted Therapy is generally used in the following cancers:

  1. Breast Cancer
  2. Melanoma
  3. Lung Cancer
  4. Colorectal Cancer

How Targeted Therapy Works Against Cancer?

Targeted Therapy treats cancer in many different ways. Let us discuss few of them below.

  1. Our Immune system may not recognize the cancer cells developed inside our body. Therapies like Targeted Therapy help our immune system to destroy the cancer cells grown in our body. This Therapy is essential to boost our immune system and fight against the bad cancer cells present in our body.
  2. Cells present in the body die when they are damaged or when they are no longer needed. But the Cancer cells will not die as part of their own, rather sustain in the body for years. Therefore, therapies like Targeted Therapy destroy the cancer cells in the body and keep you healthy.
  3. Cancer Cells will develop in our body in an uncontrolled manner. These cells spread very rapidly in our body. Usually, normal cells will divide into new small cells when they receive strong signals. But this cancer cells will divide into new cancer cells even-though they don't receive any strong signals. Here, in this case, targeted therapy interferes with proteins and stops the prevention of cells in the division.
  4. Types of cancers such as Breast and Prostate cancer require hormones to grow in our body. Therapy named Hormone therapy deals with this kind of hormones and prevents our body to develop these specific hormones.
  5. Targeted Therapy has a unique feature of killing the cancer cell substances present in the body. This therapy treatment causes the blood vessels to tie which in turn causes the tumor to shrink.

Targeted Therapy & Side Effects

Just like any treatment option, even targeted therapy has some side effects.

  • Diarrhea and Liver problems.
  • High Blood pressure.
  • Severe Blood clotting and wound healing.
  • Skin Problems like Itching and the skin will also have a tendency to become dry very easily.
  • Gastrointestinal problems.
  • Degrade in Hair Color.

It is therefore important for the patient to follow the advice and medicines prescribed by your doctor.
